Vietnam persists.

It’s difficult for an outsider to understand the depth and tenor of feelings about the Vietnam War that exist in the United States even still. Being a Vietnam veteran is a protected category, at least in Illinois, under anti-discrimination legislation.
The New York Times marks the 30th anniversary of the end of the war with an opinion piece that argues that the U.S. could have ‘won’ – or at least stopped the South from fully collapsing – if they’d only devoted ever more military might. Seemingly the North only had diplomacy and public opinion on their side, so by pulling out the image of the “awesome power” of the United States was dented. Poor things.
