A message in a bottle

It was only last week that I was thinking of the time I threw a ‘message in a bottle’ from a ship – actually I think I may have thrown 2-3 bottles overboard. I think it was about a year later that I got a letter from a young girl who had found the bottle when walking with her uncle on the beach somewhere in England. It was a strange and fun experience, taking part in a decidedly unusual medium of communication – and one that has few practical applications.
So it’s fascinating to see an example of an important use of the message in a bottle being reported by the BBC. A group of shipwrecked migrants off the Costa Rican coast – their boat was drifting aimlessly – put a message in a bottle, it was found, and they were rescued.
