Deep Throat finally uncovered

May 31st, 2005 | by aobaoill |

So Deep Throat has gone public. The famous source was Deputy FBI Director Mark Felt. That means, incidentally, that the UIUC investigative journalism class got it wrong when they concluded it was Fred Fielding, Deputy Counsel to Nixon. Somehow I don’t think that should detract too much, though, from the student project which sifted through huge amounts of data, making multiple value calls to narrow down the possible list of candidates. Glancing through their site it seems they may, at heart, have been misled by a remark that seemed to indicate that Deep Throat was a lawyer, which I think was what caused them to concentrate on the White House rather than agencies like the FBI.

The comment that Deep Throat may have been a lawyer was not that far off the mark. Many FBI agents have law degrees. But like most of these stories, context is everything.
