Galway Arts Festival lineup announced

June 15th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

I got my copy of the Galway Arts Festival 2005 schedule during the week (by email) and as usual it’s impressive. Not that every event is of interest to me. There are, however, enough events that, were I in town, I’d be happy.
The DruidSynge event is obviously an anchor event, with six different Synge plays being produced (including the Playboy of the Western World, which I think of as a Druid speciality). This year also sees another Macnas street parade, titled Áit Ait (Strange Place) which should be good family fun, as usual.
In music I’d love to catch June Tabor, Michelle Shocked (who I saw some years ago in a wonderful show in Dublin’s Vicar Street) and Sharon Shannon/Frankie Gavin/Michael McGoldrick/Jim Murray. There are many other interesting acts, including a Toasted Heretic reunion, Cane 141 (one of the first groups to record a session for Flirt FM), Mavis Staples, Marianne Faithfull, Richie Havens, The Proclaimers and more.
The comedy lineup is also reasonably strong – if dominated by Irish figures – and there seem to be some interesting art exhibitions, again as usual. I hope those of you in town during the festival enjoy it!
