New RTÉ Authority announced

June 29th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

The new RTÉ Authority has been announced. It is to be chaired by the head of a sports, sponsorship and events management company, Fintan Drury.

Other members include Maria Killian, a consultant human resources manager, Patricia King, a SIPTU regional secretary, Ian Malcolm, a PhD student and journalist, Patrick Marron, a retired businessman, Una Ní Chonaire, who will represent young people, and Stephen O’Byrnes, a public affairs consultant and former member of the authority.

It’s difficult to know but I wonder if this is the same Ian Malcolm who writes a column from a unionist perspective in Lá. If so he may be the only member of the authority with any broadcasting experience:

Is fo-eagarthóir ar an Belfast Newsletter é Ian, agus scríobhann sé ar Foinse freisin, agus craolann ar RTE.

Of course given the role of the authority a knowledge of the technical/day-to-day processes of broadcasting may not be necessary, but a particular interest in and knowledge of the role of a public service broadcast can help inform a strategic vision that extends beyond making the books balance.
