Local cable TV for Dublin

July 5th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

I mentioned in a recent post that I thought the delays experienced by the BCI’s Broadcasting Support Scheme might slow down the licensing of local cable channels. It seems that at least one channel wasn’t delayed, as they signed a contract with the BCI today. Of course the channel – imaginatively called City Channelseems more a commercial offering than some of the other potential local channels I’ve heard about:

City Channel will provide a niche television service, dedicated to the interests of the residents of Dublin City and County. Programming will include lifestyle subjects such as Motoring, Property, Local Government, Dublin Culture, What’s-On Guide, Shopping and Travel, in addition to transport and weather updates.

It’s being headed up by David Harvey who is already a well-known independent TV producer in Ireland, with a group of other entrepeneurs on board, so is very much a business proposition. I wonder whether the other potential local channels will see the light any time soon – and whether they will be similarly commercially oriented.

But will it reach the highs of the Cablelink Channel with their giantess hosted ads for Unique Menswear?
