Attacks hit UK underground

July 7th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

I just woke up to news of the terrible attacks on the London Underground. Listening to a short excerpt from Blair on the news a distinct tremor in his voice, obviously shaken by the news.
The BBC is reporting an eye-witness as saying that the bus [that was also attacked] was travelling from Euston to Russell Square and had been “packed” with people turned away from Tube stops, indicating that that attack too may originally have been intended for the Underground.
I endorse the response of Michael D. Higgins, Irish Labour Party spokesperson on foreign affairs:

I would like to express my sympathies with the families and friends of all those who have lost their lives, as well as those injured, in today’s attacks in London.
All right-thinking people will be appalled at these atrocities. It is clear at this stage that there will be significant casualties.
No cause can be served, and nothing can justify attacks of this nature, which take their toll on the lives of innocent civilians. Such attacks are cowardly and despicable.
It is likely that these attacks were planned some time ago. They are thus unlikely to be a reaction to the substantive issues relating to the G8 discussions or developments on the items that constitute the agenda at the summit.
They are more likely calculated to take advantage of the opportunity which presented itself in London due to the amounts of police staff being diverted to Scotland.
We must be unequivocal in our condemnation of these horrific acts. We must also ensure that our reaction is not such as to feed into the expectations of those responsible for these appalling killings and injury to human life.
