Shell may ‘walk away’ from Mayo oil

August 5th, 2005 | by aobaoill |

Shell has threatened to ‘walk away’ if required to build an off-shore (rather than on-shore) refinery to process the oil reserves off the Mayo coast. It’s occurred to me that this might be the best solution for the Irish people. Since Ray Burke and others effectively gave the oil rights away, the Irish people are essentially seeing no benefit from the reserves. But if Shell walks away, surely the Irish government could negotiate a new, fairer, deal with another company?
In related news, at the same link, it looks like the Rossport 5 may soon be out of prison – though it isn’t yet clear whether they will still be forced to ‘purge’ their contempt.

“He said he believed Shell would abandon the entire project if it were forced to build an offshore terminal.”
“he believed” makes this a non binding statement.
    Pay no heed.

Well, yes, there is that. But just the statement – similar, I think, to previous ones – started me thinking about the nature of the threat. Specifically, that it might be best on all levels if Shell could be persuaded to drop out….

    oops.
Sorry about that. The computer sat whirring after I pressed the button the first time.
I didn’t mean to be as emphatic as the double posting makes me seem!
