Heather and Sinead may not be racing until Tuesday but other members of the Irish squad are already in action. Niamh raced in the heats of the women’s lightweight single sculls earlier, coming third. With the first two in each heat (there were four) going direct to the semi-finals, her next race is in the repechage on Wednesday. It’s obviously problematic to make predictions solely on the basis of performances in the heats, but she should stand a reasonable chance of making it through.

The men’s heavyweight four also came third in their heat, and similarly seem well positioned in the repechage.

I had understood that a men’s lightweight single scull boat was also selected but this doesn’t appear to be the case and there was no Irish rower in the event.
